Create vApps in VDC

This guide relies on the concepts covered in Getting Started in your VDC environment.

A vApp is the logical association of one or more VMs, networks and applicable resources that make up a function. vApps can commonly contain multiple VMs which all operate to provide an application. A common example is: 

• A Web Server VM
• An Application Server VM
• A Database VM

These three VMs can operate within a single vApp, allowing for easier administration and management of the application. 

Creating a vApp

To create a vApp, ensure you are in the Compute > vApps section of your VDC. 

From here, you have a number of options: 

New vApp

New vApp allows you to define and set all settings manually for creating a vApp. You can set a name and description and add or create as many virtual machines as you require for your deployment.

When selecting Add Virtual Machine, you can utilise some of our built-in template images, or choose and define your own. 

For example, an Alma 8-based VM from the list of available templates called “db-01”:

Or if you have your own ISO, select Type: New and define a Boot Image (refer to “Uploading Media to your VDC” for this process)

Scroll down to identify more customisation options such as Storage, Compute, and Network options. 

Press OK and repeat this with as many VMs as you want to add to this vApp. 

Add vApp from OVF

OVF is an open format for the packaging and distribution of VM files. It can be easy to think of an OVF file like a zip file for a VM.

Some providers or third parties may provide you with an OVF or OVA file, which can be uploaded to your VDC platform. You will be prompted to browse for the relevant file(s) from your local computer. Please maintain a fast, steady Internet connection while your OVF/OVA files upload.

Once uploaded you should be prompted with additional options that may be included within the OVF pre-deployment.

We have provided a number of popular distributions for you to use to quickly set up your new environment. Select the template from our list of available options, then proceed through the wizard to customise your vApp to meet your needs.
