Article summary

Veeam Agent Backup Recovery Media is required in case an entire machine/operating system needs to be restored.

Scenarios where you'll need to restore an entire machine include:

  • Operating system fails to boot and boot repair is not successful.
  • Operating system has been compromised, for example "Crypto-Locked".

The process of restoring an entire operating system from backups is also known as 'Bare-Metal Recovery'.

Depending on your operating system, and if the machine is a server or local workstation, there are different processes to either create or obtain recovery media. Below is a short summary of each.

On-Prem Servers or Workstations / Colocation / Dedicated Servers

For Windows machines that are backed up using the Veeam agent you must create your own backup recovery media.

If you need to restore an entire machine, you will need to boot from this recovery media and follow the wizard to restore your backup.

The recovery media can be stored on either a CD/DVD, USB, or ISO file.

Dedicated Servers
For dedicated servers you'll want to create the backup media on the server, and then download the ISO file to store locally.

It can later be mounted via ILO or IPMI if you ever need to initiate a bare-metal recovery.

Please see the official Veeam documentation on the topic:

VDC - Virtual Datacenter

Recovery media is not required if you're using the self-service backup plugin inside our VDC product.

You can initiate full VM / vAPP restores via the interface.

Please see the following documentation.

Cloud Servers

All of our cloud servers are backed up by Servers Australia with a 14 day retention policy.

Please contact Servers Australia support if you need a restoration of your Cloud Server.

Linux

Linux recovery media is available for direct download from Veeam, and therefore you don't need to create it yourself.

You can download the latest Linux recovery media from here:
