# Create VMs with Custom ISO in VDC

This guide relies on the concepts covered in [**Getting Started in your VDC environment**](/v1/docs/quickstart-getting-started-with-vdc).

Virtual Machines are virtualised instances of an operating system, using logically provided and provisioned with **vCPUs**, **Memory**, and **Storage**. You can operate a VM without operating in a vApp but we strongly recommend you create a vApp as part of your deployment. Refer to the [**Creating vApps in VDC**](/v1/docs/create-vapps-in-vdc) here for more information.

1. Within **Data Centers** -> **Compute** -> **Virtual Machines** -> Select **New VM** to enter the VM creation wizard. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/d809f158-d4f4-47ff-83d4-18d9c9f7a04d/Images/Documentation/image-1776833929807.png)
2. You can utilise some of our built-in template images, or choose and define your own. For example, an Alma 9-based VM from the list of available templates called “db-01”: ![](https://cdn.document360.io/d809f158-d4f4-47ff-83d4-18d9c9f7a04d/Images/Documentation/image-1776834029673.png)
3. Once added, it will be visible for selection alongside the default available ISOs.

Congratulations, you have created a VM with a Custom ISO within your VDC.
