Adding an IP alias to Windows

Prev Next

There may be times when you have multiple IPs assigned to a single Windows server with only one Network Interface Card (NIC).

How do you add those additional IPs to Windows? The following steps will guide you through the process.

Note: you can only have one default gateway active at a time

1. Using your Start Menu's Search feature, Search Windows for "ncpa.cpl" and press Enter.

2. Right-click on the Adapter that you wish to modify and select 'Properties'

3. Locate the entry "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" , select it and click 'Properties'

4. Select the 'Advanced' option:

5. Under the IP settings tab, click 'Add' under the IP Addresses header:

6. Input the new IP Address and Subnet Mask, then select 'Add':

7. Select 'OK' when done in all the menus that we have opened to make sure that the changes have saved:

Provided the details entered were correct, the new IP Address should start responding within a minute or two.
